Session 27

The group decides it best to vacate the immediate area around Dun Brees. Dierdre is one step ahead of everyone and after seeing the boat drifting south, she is headed back to their base camp. There she meets up with Lance and the party menagerie (bear, three horses, her cat, Cian’s hawk….) They discuss what to do and decide to start to head south. Since the camp is North of the city it means taking a wide circle around Dun Brees itself.

Bebe is about to pass out and beaches the tiny rowboat just north of town. Back behind them they can make out the silhouette of the larger ship, several small fires burning on the deck. Apparently they lost them in the Obscuring Mist, as the ship did not give pursuit (or else the fires on deck presented a more pressing matter…). Bebe secures the rowboat and her and Cinn Oir struggle getting even Liam’s tiny frame to shore. They lay down exhausted on the beach.

Cian and Kentaka have somehow managed to drag the unconscious and half drowned Archu to shore. They join Bebe, Cinn Oir, and the badly wounded Liam on the beach. Unsure of their next course of action, the group decides to move as far north as they can, sending Cian ahead to find Dierdre and Lance and bring them back to help them move out.

Cian takes to the skies and is soon back in the area where they made their base camp a few miles north of Dun Brees. Dierdre and Lance are no where to be seen however. Unsure what to do, he and Kentaka take to the air flying broadening search patterns. Finally, Kentaka spots something to the east and they locate Dierdre and Lance. Cian catches up to them and lets them know where the rest of the group is. He tells them they need help evacuating the area as Liam and Archu are out and badly injured, Bebe is beyond fatigued and Cinn Oir is heavily wounded.

Dierdre, not a fan of the idea of boarding the boat in the first place, hops on a horse and tells Cian she is riding North. She states that if the party isn’t caught and thrown in jail then she’ll meet them farther up the coast. Cian protests but Dierdre says it was a bad idea to board the boat with limited reconnaissance, start a fight, possibly making enemies out of people they have no need to and that the risk involved in heading back to anywhere near Dun Brees is too great. Cian seems preterbed, and offers that the hideous creatures they found on the boat couldn’t have been up to any good. He is unwilling to stop Dierdre at any rate.

Lance on the other hand, has one problem. He tells Dierdre she can go as she pleases but the horse she is on is carrying their provisions. Dierdre scoffs at him and says the party can have them when and if they catch up to her. Lance is not at all convinced by this idea and states his personal doubt that she may just run off and leave the group behind. Lance again requests that she leave the horse.

There is a tense moment, Lance speaking in calmly measured tones, his hand resting casually near his sword hilt. Dierdre, fire burning behind her eyes unleashing heated debate whose words could easily transform to those of deadly magic. In the end, Dierdre looses the supplies to the ground and rides off North again telling Lance and Cian that if they manage to escape, they will find her to the north along the coast.

Lance and Cian head south as rapidly as possible. They find the rest of the group just where they left them. Cian takes to the skies again as Lance helps secure Liam and Archu on the remaining horse. Cinn Oir climbs on the back of her black bear and lies down, her tired arms dangling. Bebe clambers up behind Lance and they take off to the North.

From the skies, Cian can make out the small dock. Several torches are now alongside it and he can see that a number of crimson robed figures are loading the boat. Seems the enemy has no intention of pursuing, immediately at any rate. Some members of the city watch are present as well and they seem to be eyeing the crimson robed strangers with great suspicion as they load up their vessel. After watching for a bit, Cian catches up to the party as they ride swiftly north.

The following morning, they are met by Dierdre who has indeed found a place to hide out for the time being. Atop a seaside cliff rests an old abandoned sod long house. There is just enough room for the party inside. They try to make themselves comfortable while Lance tends to Liam. With a few Cure Light Wounds he has Liam on his feet once again just in time for Liam to begin his morning meditation. Not long after sunrise, Liam is busy healing up the injured members of the party.

Midday, the group decides to try to gain some information about the state of Dun Brees. Cian leaves first returning with interesting news. The crimson robed stranger’s ship is gone from the harbor. There is also a large commotion outside the outer gate of the keep. Most of the town is there and two gaurds stand in front of the outer gate denying entrance.

The group talks it over and decides to try to get to the bottom of it. As they start to layout a plan, Cian, perched atop the decaying wall of the roofless house interrupts. He reports that a magical sensor is hanging in the air just above the small house. (Paranoia runs rampant lately and scrying checks have been made daily….) The group ceases talk of plans and waits patiently. After several minutes the sensor is gone. The first impulse is to leave their new camp, however, unsure of who the scrier even was (Cu Roi has been known to peek in on them as have Gaelyn…) they proceed with discussions about gathering more info on the new happening at Dun Brees.

Dierdre (of all people!!) offers to disguise herself and try to gain entrance to the inner keep. She plans to take a cask of the high-priced wine they recovered (Session 21 from the old Fomorian city) and try to convince the guards it is a special delivery of sorts. Bebe will accompany her (disguised by Dierdre as well.) The rest of the group can spend the day at rest.

Dierdre and Bebe push their way through the crowds to the outer gate, listening for anything of interest. The main buzz seems to be that something has happened to Lord Brees. Speculation is varied from murdered to kidnapped to simply abandoned the keep. The anxious townspeople harrass the tight lipped guards for more info. The gaurds offer nothing and assure them that everything is ok and that the rumors (which must have slipped out by way of the servants) are completely false.

Dierdre and Bebe managed to make their way into the inner keep, Dierdre bluffing the guards into accepting her story of "a special delivery of wine". They run into little trouble until they hit the kitchens of the inner keep itself where an obviously wary servant turns them over to the master servant. He staunchly reports not having heard a thing of this special delivery. He mumbles something to the effect that it must have been those "cursed strangers", some visiting dignitaries that Lord Brees let have the run of the place. He tells Dierdre to wait there while he gets the (new) magistrate.

Soon, Dierdre is faced by a very skeptical magistrate who is not at all swayed by her story. He asks her to uncork the wine and insists she take a drink of it. Dierdre is a bit befuddled but does so, all the time protesting that this special wine is going to waste. The magistrate then hands the cask to the master servant who inspects it, tastes it and almost literally melts in front of them. He is simply at a loss for words (the quality of this wine was astounding….) The magistrate seems less suspicious, but orders Dierdre to leave anyway. Dierdre again protests, but her words rebound off of a slamming kitchen door.

As they leave the kitchens, Dierdre and Bebe go "looking for the bathroom". The keep itself is mostly empty and Dierdre and Bebe take note of a loud gathering inside the keep’s great hall. The magistrate’s voice can be heard above others which range from panic to concerned tones. They are almost discovered as a guard comes rushing up the stairs and runs into the Hall shouting "They’re back!" The room quickly clears and most of the guards rush outside the keep. Puzzled, Dierdre and Bebe decide to take advantage of this.

They sneak through a mostly empty keep and managed to walk right into Lord Bree’s chambers. The room is empty and the mirror Dierdre remembers seeing last time she was here is gone. The secret wall safe is also emptied as well as an open chest at the foot of the bed.

Bebe and Dierdre leave and sneak downstairs to the Magistrate’s quarters. (This is where the last fight in Dun Brees erupted….Session 20) Once in, Dierdre casts a Light spell and they are met by an odd sight. Sitting in the desk directly opposite the door is, Lord Brees. Well, not quite. It is a highly detailed statue of Lord Brees. One hand is below the table, the other resting flat just inches above the table. They search the rest of the magistrate’s office finding nothing of interest save evidence of burned parchment in the fireplace. The leave quietly and quickly head out of the keep, letting the guards at the gate know their displeasure at being thrown out.

Meanwhile, outside, Cian has been flying low circles around Dun Brees, keeping an out for Dierdre and Bebe and any sign of trouble. Suddenly he sees the crowd at the outer wall surge and shouts of alarm rise from the guard. With eagle vision, Cian scans the city, looking for the source of the disturbance. Suspecting Dierdre and Bebe in the keep he checks there first only to see a guard running from the outer wall toward the keep. He looks back out to town, then to the dock. His beak flops open at the sight of Liam inside a small fishing boat throwing the catch back out to sea.

A small crowd at the nearby pub is standing gaping as the little green man throws fish into the water. Most are dumbfounded, the rest take heavy drinks between wide eyed stares. Cian watches as the gaurds flood from the keep heading for the dock. Unsure what Liam is up to or even what to do, Cian flies low to the docks and simply tries to keep an eye on things.

As the guards get within sight of Liam he leaps off the small dock and into the sea. The rushes of guards follows to the edge of the dock. Among them is magistrate. He begins shouting orders and soon several fisherman from the pub and several guards are manning a number of fishing vessels, slowly trolling the water with nets. Cian sighs in exasperation at Liam’s actions and does his best to keep an eye on the keep where Dierdre and Bebe and the waters.

Not long after, Dierdre and Bebe emerge and slip out of town tot he North. Cian stays near town watching the search in the harbor. As the night falls, the fishermen give up their search. Cian, hoping Liam swam back to camp, flies north as well. Once back at camp he finds everyone accounted for and unharmed. Liam undergoes a light lecture, especially given that his only reason seemed to be he "was bored". Cian begins to openly wonder how much like a true faye Liam has started to become….

The session ends with the party (well Cian actually) spotting the boat belonging to the crimson robed monks just off shore from their camp. The boat holds position into the evening and begins to head north. The party decides to follow…..
